Quitting drugs?
Quitting drugs is challenging. Your body and mind need to adjust to the absence of the substances. Our specialists can assist you with outpatient care or at our drug rehabilitation clinic. Together, we will determine which treatment is best suited for your drug addiction.
Drug addiction treatment and detox
Changes GGZ typically begins drug addiction treatment with a detox program. During detox, you stop using any addictive substances, allowing the drugs to be cleansed from your body. This process is called “detoxification.” You can detox at home or in one of our rehab clinics.
Detoxification usually lasts between 1 to 3 weeks. If necessary, medication may be prescribed to alleviate withdrawal symptoms. After the detox, it’s crucial to stay off drugs. Our specialists at our location in Weert will support you intensively throughout the detox process. Once detox is complete, you will continue directly into clinical treatment, either in Weert or South Africa.
When do I have a drug addiction?
How do you know if you have a drug addiction? When does your drug use qualify as an addiction? We’ve listed some warning signs for you:
- Do you use drugs to feel better?
- When you use drugs, do you use more than you initially planned?
- Do you experience withdrawal symptoms when you stop using drugs for a while?
- Do you argue with family or friends about your drug use?
- Have you tried to cut down or stop using drugs before
- Do you try to deny or hide your drug use?
- Have you ever canceled plans, skipped work, or missed school because of drug use
If you think you may have a drug addiction, schedule an appointment, and we will help you with treatment.
Consequences of drug addiction
- You suffer from insomnia. You worry constantly and feel trapped in a vicious cycle. Even though the downsides of drug use outweigh the benefits, quitting seems impossible.
- You feel indifferent. Drug use causes you to become emotionally numb and out of balance.
- You isolate yourself, and relationships fall apart. You hide your addiction from your partner, family, and friends, surrounding yourself with others who share your lifestyle, neglecting those who truly care about you.
- Weight fluctuations. Your drug use leads to an unhealthy lifestyle, affecting your weight. You experience physical discomfort and exhaust yourself mentally and physically.
- You become paranoid and lose touch with reality.
Different categories of drugs
Drugs are divided into three main categories: depressants, stimulants, and hallucinogens. Sometimes, a drug can fall into multiple categories. For example, MDMA (ecstasy) is a stimulant but can also have hallucinogenic effects.
- Depressants: Alcohol, sedatives, heroin, GHB, opium, and cannabis (weed, hash, and marijuana).
- Stimulants: Cocaine, MDMA (ecstasy), and amphetamines (speed).
- Hallucinogens: LSD, magic mushrooms, ketamine, and DMT.
