Alcohol addiction

How to recognize alcohol addiction?
In Western society, alcohol consumption is socially accepted. In South Africa, it’s quite common to see a glass of wine with a meal, a beer with friends, or something stronger at a party. This social acceptance makes the line between problem drinking and addiction very thin. Even though moderation is advised and the legal drinking age has been raised, alcohol addiction is prevalent in our society. Addiction support can help individuals overcome this issue. Causes of alcohol addiction

Alcohol is both mentally and physically addictive and is the most common form of addiction.

Alcohol issues affect all segments of society and can stem from various causes. These causes can be categorized into heredity, environmental influences, or personal issues such as depression. An alcohol addiction can also develop innocently, for example, through a job where drinking is part of social events like parties and dinners. Additionally, children of parents with an alcohol addiction are at a higher risk of developing an addiction themselves, and it has been shown that environments with casual attitudes towards alcohol can lead to increased alcohol use and eventually addiction. Read more here about the consequences of alcohol addiction.

Development of alcohol addiction

Alcohol addiction, or alcoholism, typically develops gradually. A casual drink can lead to more frequent use and eventually to a situation where someone cannot function properly without alcohol. Frequent alcohol use can lead to tolerance, meaning that the effects of alcohol diminish, requiring more to achieve the same level of intoxication. This can trap someone in a vicious cycle of consuming increasing amounts of alcohol.

When do you have an alcohol addiction?

If someone with an alcohol problem does not receive appropriate help, it can lead to physical and mental deterioration. As mentioned earlier, the line between a problem and an addiction is thin. However, an addiction can be identified if someone consumes more than two to three alcoholic drinks per day or engages in binge drinking, defined as consuming at least five drinks per occasion, several times a week.

Frequently Asked Questions

Alcohol-related issues can often be confusing. Below, we address some common questions about alcohol addiction.
We provide secondary level specialized mental health care, which means that treatment falls within the basic insurance coverage. However, you will need to cover the deductible set by the insurance provider, provided it has not already been used. You will always be informed in advance about the amount of your personal contribution. Please note: For inpatient treatment in South Africa, travel costs will be at your own expense.
If you consume more than two glasses of alcohol per day and drink alcohol on fewer than two days per week, you are drinking too much and may be considered a problem drinker. Please note: For clinical treatment in South Africa, you will be responsible for the cost of the treatment.
You might think you don’t fit the stereotype of an alcoholic. You’ve never been homeless? You’ve never stolen money to buy alcohol? You’ve never been caught driving under the influence? You have a job? Then you might think you can’t really be an alcoholic, right? Alcoholism can take many different forms. Stereotypes don’t provide an accurate picture of alcoholics in our society.
There is no specific number of drinks that defines alcoholism. We refer to alcohol addiction when drinking becomes problematic and a person develops a physical or psychological craving for alcohol, to the extent that functioning becomes possible only under the influence.
Problematic alcohol use is seen in so-called ‘problem drinkers’. As a problem drinker, you consume excessive amounts of alcohol, gradually losing control over your life. This can lead to issues in areas such as work, health, and/or relationships. We refer to it as alcohol addiction when this problematic behaviour results in a physical or psychological compulsion for alcohol, and significant clinical impairments are present. For example, you might experience sweating and trembling when not drinking, making it difficult to perform your job. With alcohol addiction, you can generally only function while under the influence of alcohol.
